The United States will be without striker Folarin Balogun for their FIFA World Cup Round of 16 clash against Belgium after he was sent off during the Americans’ 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Softfootball understands that Balogun received a straight red card in the 64th minute following a challenge on Bosnia defender Tarek Muharemovic. Referee Raphael Claus initially allowed play to continue without issuing a card, believing the incident did not warrant disciplinary action.

However, after being advised by VAR official Juan Soto to review the challenge, Claus overturned his original decision. Replays showed Balogun accidentally stepping on Muharemovic’s ankle while both players were contesting the ball, with the defender’s ankle appearing to twist on impact. Following the pitch-side review, the referee produced a straight red card, ruling Balogun out of the knockout tie against Belgium.

The dismissal has since ignited fierce debate among American supporters on social media, with many questioning the consistency of refereeing decisions at the tournament.

Several fans pointed to Lionel Messi’s challenge against Algeria in Argentina’s opening World Cup match, arguing that the incidents were remarkably similar. They contend that if Balogun’s tackle merited a straight red card, then Messi should have faced the same punishment.

The perceived inconsistency has fueled widespread criticism, with many USA supporters calling on FIFA to clarify the interpretation of such challenges and explain what they believe are differing officiating standards for comparable incidents.
