Reports reveal that United States striker Folarin Balogun has been cleared to face Belgium after his suspension was unexpectedly lifted, a development that has stunned much of the football world. Many fans and analysts are now demanding an explanation for the sudden reversal.
Softfootball understands that FIFA has suspended Balogun’s one‑match ban for a probationary period of one year, citing Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. This decision makes him eligible to play in the Round of 16 despite receiving a straight red card in the USA’s match against Bosnia.
Balogun was sent off in the 64th minute after a challenge on Bosnia defender Tarek Muharemovic as referee Raphael Claus initially allowed play to continue, believing the incident did not warrant a card, but VAR intervention led to the dismissal.
FIFA’s official statement reads:
“In line with Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, the implementation of the match suspension is suspended for a probationary period of one year. If Folarin Balogun commits another infringement of a similar nature and gravity during the probationary period, the suspension shall be revoked and the sanction enforced, without prejudice to any additional sanction imposed for the new infringement.”
Balogun’s reinstatement provides a major boost for the United States ahead of their crucial Round of 16 clash with Belgium.
