Chelsea confirm deal completed to sign 17-year-old fullback Yisa Alao from Sheffield Wednesday. Contract until 2028.

Alao came through Sheffield Wednesday’s academy and made his senior debut back in August 2025 at just 16, in a Carabao Cup tie against Bolton. Since then, he has played five first-team games, including FA Cup starts against Brentford and a league match versus Portsmouth.

Scouts have noticed his pace, attacking instinct, and willingness to throw himself into tackles. He’s young but seems to handle pressure better than most.

The reported fee is around £500,000–£600,000, with add-ons that could push it up to £6 million depending on appearances and milestones. Chelsea, who recently defeated Crystal Palace 3-1 following a 1-0 Champions League victory against Pafos, apparently beat Manchester United to his signature.

Manchester United’s £450,000 offer was rejected, and the club also fended off quiet looks from Liverpool and a few other Premier League sides. Reports say Chelsea’s clear plan for Alao’s development was what sealed the deal.

Born in England, Alao is also eligible to play for Nigeria internationally, adding a little extra intrigue for the future. He recently said goodbye to Sheffield Wednesday, thanking teammates, staff, and fans for ten years at the club.

At Chelsea, Alao will start in the academy, with loan moves likely down the line for regular senior experience, following in the footsteps of Jimmy-Jay Morgan, Caleb Wiley, or Mamadou Sarr. He’s still very early in his career, but people are watching closely. If he develops well, Stamford Bridge might just have another exciting talent to keep an eye on.
