Barcelona have taken a major step in securing their future after reaching a verbal agreement on a new long-term contract with Fermín López, keeping the midfielder at the club until June 2031.

The agreement underlines Barcelona’s determination to build around their emerging core, with Fermín viewed as a key part of the club’s long-term sporting project. The midfielder had opportunities to leave during the summer window but made it clear he wanted to stay and fight for his place at Camp Nou.

According to Fabrizio Romano via his official X handle, the deal is now in place and only awaiting formalities, Romano posted:

BREAKING: Barcelona verbally agree new deal with Fermín López valid until June 2031.
Fermín rejected to leave in August and he’s set to sign new deal soon, with salary improved.
Could be signed already this week.

As softfootball earlier reported, Fermín López publicly reaffirmed his commitment to Barcelona despite strong interest from Chelsea. The Premier League side explored a move for the Spaniard during the summer but were quickly discouraged after Barcelona slapped a €90m price tag on the fast-rising midfielder.

Chelsea’s interest highlighted Fermín’s growing reputation across Europe, following a run of impressive performances that showcased his energy, technical quality, and intelligence in midfield. Barcelona, however, were never keen on letting him go and instead moved decisively to reward his progress with an improved contract.

With this new deal, Barcelona not only fend off interest from top clubs but also send a clear message about their faith in Fermín López as one of the faces of the club’s next generation.
