Softfootball has confirmed that new club captain Cristian Romero has agreed to sign a new contract with the London club.
The defensive leader has agreed to commit his future to Tottenham, he agreed to stay in June and is now likely to put pen to paper. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano also confirmed the development on his official X account.

In his words:
“Cuti Romero has agreed to sign new deal at Spurs, all done and sealed. Spurs captain decided back in June to stay and new contract is now complete. Tottenham new manager Frank see Cuti as key part of the project and despite all links with Atlético, deal was never close.”
Back in June, there had been strong talk of Romero heading to Atletico Madrid for a fee in the region of €55m-60m (£47m-51m). However, those claims were quickly dismissed. Softfootball reported that the defender not only wants to stay but also accepted the armband following the departure of Son Heung-min.
Romero’s previous deal, signed in August 2022, was due to run until 2027. Now, Tottenham can breathe a little easier knowing their defensive leader is tied down for the long term. His presence was already felt in Spurs’ opening Premier League game of the season, where he led the team to a commanding 3-0 win over newly promoted Burnley. Calm, vocal, and strong in the tackle, Romero looked every inch the new skipper.

Sources close to Tottenham told Softfootball that manager Thomas Frank has already held discussions with Romero about the direction of the club and his role in it. Spurs are said to have offered him the highest wage packet in the squad, and talks have wrapped up smoothly.
For Tottenham, keeping hold of their top players is proving just as important as chasing new signings this summer. And with Romero now wearing the armband and committing his future, it feels like a significant victory for the club off the pitch as well as on it.
