Softfootball can confirm that Cristian Romero has completed his transfer from Tottenham Hotspur to Atlético Madrid in a deal worth €40 million including add-ons, with the Premier League club also retaining a 15% sell-on clause.
The agreement brings an end to weeks of negotiations between Atlético and Tottenham after the Spanish side formally opened club-to-club talks for the Argentina international.
Romero joined Tottenham from Atalanta in 2021 and quickly established himself as one of the club’s most important defenders. The 28-year-old centre-back also became captain and played a key role during his time in North London.
The Argentine defender arrives following an impressive international campaign with Argentina during their run to the 2026 FIFA World Cup final. He is expected to undergo his medical before completing the remaining formalities of the transfer.
For Atlético, the signing represents a major reinforcement at centre-back as Simeone continues to build a squad capable of competing for domestic and European honours.
Tottenham, meanwhile, have secured a significant financial return while protecting their future interests through the 15% sell-on clause.
Romero’s departure marks the end of a four-year spell with Spurs and begins a new chapter in La Liga with one of Spain’s most competitive clubs.
