Atlético Madrid are preparing to submit a new offer for Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero once the departures of Nahuel Molina and Thiago Almada are completed, with Sergio Ruggeri also expected to follow.

Softfootball confirmed yesterday that Atlético had opened direct club-to-club negotiations with Tottenham over a potential transfer for Romero. Discussions have continued on both the club and player sides as Diego Simeone’s side work to strengthen their defence.

The Spanish club are planning a package worth around €40 million for the Argentine centre-back and want to move quickly to prevent other clubs from hijacking the deal.

Talks between Atlético and Romero’s representatives remain ongoing, with the defender understood to be keen on a move to Madrid.

Arsenal also made an enquiry for the 28-year-old earlier this week, but Tottenham would prefer to sell Romero to a club outside England, strengthening Atlético’s position in the negotiations.

Atlético now appear determined to accelerate the deal once their planned exits are finalised, with a new proposal expected to be sent to Tottenham soon.
