Softfootball can confirm that Atlético Madrid have opened club-to-club negotiations with Tottenham Hotspur over a potential transfer for Cristian Romero.

Atlético are now preparing a new official offer for the Argentine defender and have emerged as clear frontrunners in the race for his signature. Talks are progressing on both the club and player sides, with Romero understood to be keen on a move to Madrid.

Arsenal also made an enquiry for the 28-year-old earlier this week, but Tottenham would prefer to sell Romero to a club outside England, strengthening Atlético’s position in the negotiations.

Atlético have also opened discussions with Romero’s representatives as they look to accelerate the deal and reach an agreement with Spurs.

Meanwhile, Inter Milan had previously reached an agreement with Tottenham over the transfer, but the Italian club still need to make player exits before they can complete the move.

Inter had also opened direct talks with Romero’s representatives as part of their efforts to sign the defender, but Atlético’s recent push has now placed the Spanish side firmly at the front of the queue.
