It was a big performance, Oliver Glasner says after defeating Liverpool in Community Shield

Crystal Palace had to come back twice against Liverpool in regulation period and be the better team during the penalty shoot-outs to hand football fans the upset of the 2025/2026 season. Softfootball watched as the Premier League champions and the FA Cup winner slugged it out for the first trophy of the 2025/26 season.

Jean-Phillipe Mateta and Ismaila Sarr were the heroes for Palace in 90 minutes as they helped the team come back twice to drag the game to penalties. Dean Henderson became the super hero of the day after making two penalty saves in the shoot-out.

The Eagles have now two trophies in a space of a few months after going almost all existent without any trophy. They won the English FA Cup against Manchester City and now have won the FA Community Shield against Liverpool.

Despite no big signing yet, Oliver Glasner has helped the Eagles set a record they never thought exist in their history. The gaffer was full of praise and pride in the post match conference where he was giving his thoughts about the game.

The gaffer’s thought put together on the club’s website. Glasner said:

I like it [the feeling]. I have to give big credit to the players for this win today. We came back and were able to decide the game on penalties.

We were on the same level as Liverpool, and it was a big performance. I’m proud of the team.

The German tactician highlighted the team’s ability to create chances, noting. We know what we can do and how we can create chances.

Things have developed over 18 months, and the players are really starting to believe in what we are doing. I knew we could score at least two goals.

Palace will still need a little bit of additions to bolster their squad as they will be playing on the continent this season.
