Manchester City Circle as Barcelona Push for New Jules Koundé Deal

Barcelona are working hard behind the scenes to secure the long-term future of Jules Koundé amid growing interest from European heavyweights, including Manchester City.

Despite ongoing financial challenges that have persisted since the pandemic, the Catalan club have done well to retain key players, with only Lionel Messi and Ousmane Dembélé departing against the club’s wishes. Now, the spotlight turns to Koundé, whose future could soon become one of the most pressing issues at the Camp Nou.

Softfootball previously reported that Barcelona had wrapped up a loan deal for Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford, allowing the club to redirect its focus towards contract renewals and stability. Sporting Director Deco has prioritised squad retention over marquee signings this summer, having already secured new deals for young stars such as Pedri, Gavi, Ronald Araújo, and Lamine Yamal.

Koundé, 26, is contracted until the summer of 2027 but has emerged as a target for Manchester City. The Premier League giants are said to admire the Frenchman’s versatility and consistency, particularly given his strong performances at right-back under Hansi Flick and his prior success as a central defender at Sevilla.

According to French journalist Fabrice Hawkins claimed via his official X account that both Manchester City and another elite European club have made contact regarding Koundé.

Hawkins posted:

“For several weeks, FC Barcelona and Jules Koundé have been negotiating a contract extension. A positive outcome is hoped for by all parties. Manchester City and another top-tier club have made inquiries about the French international.”

“Tied to Barça until 2027, the 26-year-old player is highly valued by the Catalan club, which considers him the best in the world in his position.”

Sources close to the negotiations say Barcelona hold Koundé in high regard, believing he is one of the best defenders in world football at his position. Talks over a new contract reportedly began as far back as February, and all indications suggest that both the player and the club are eager to reach an agreement.

Nonetheless, Barcelona are aware that time is of the essence. Should a renewal not be agreed upon before next summer, they could be pressured into entertaining offers below his valuation.

Interest from the Premier League is nothing new Chelsea and Arsenal have both been monitoring Koundé’s situation for months, with Chelsea in particular said to be in regular contact with his agent. The London club also made a strong push to sign him in 2021 before he eventually chose Barcelona.

With contract talks ongoing and transfer interest intensifying, the coming weeks could prove crucial in determining whether Koundé remains a pillar in Barcelona’s future or becomes the next star to slip through their fingers.
