Manchester City will look to maintain their perfect Premier League record under new manager Enzo Maresca when they welcome Frank Lampard’s Coventry City to the Etihad Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The fixture will be the first meeting between the two clubs in any competition since March 2002, when Manchester City secured a 4-2 victory over Coventry at Maine Road while competing in the second tier under the late Kevin Keegan.
The Citizens enter the weekend looking to make it three wins from their opening three Premier League matches of the 2026/27 campaign. City are aiming to achieve that feat for the third time in four seasons after making an impressive start to life following Pep Guardiola’s departure.
Maresca’s side opened the campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 comeback victory over Bournemouth at the Etihad Stadium before producing a much more convincing display against Crystal Palace on matchday two.
City secured a comfortable 4-1 away victory over Palace, with Rayan Cherki and Erling Haaland both scoring twice to underline the attacking quality available to Maresca.
The result also represented City’s first major statement of the post-Guardiola era as they quickly established themselves as early contenders following their managerial change.
Coventry, meanwhile, arrive at the Etihad looking to recover from a difficult start to their return to the Premier League.
The Sky Blues were comfortably beaten 3-0 by reigning champions Arsenal on the opening weekend before suffering another disappointing result last weekend, losing 1-0 at home to Hull City.
Lampard admitted after the defeat that there were “some serious lessons to learn” as Coventry continue to adjust to the demands of top-flight football.
The former England midfielder, who also spent the 2014/15 season playing for Manchester City, has endured a difficult managerial record in the Premier League in recent years.
Coventry have also struggled defensively, failing to keep a clean sheet in 18 consecutive Premier League matches while conceding 37 goals during that run.
Lampard’s last Premier League victory came in May 2023, when he guided Chelsea to a 3-1 win away at Bournemouth during his spell as caretaker manager.
Saturday’s encounter therefore presents a major challenge for Coventry, who face a Manchester City side full of confidence and looking to continue their perfect start.
For Maresca, another victory would provide further evidence that City have adapted quickly to the changes following Guardiola’s departure, while Coventry will hope to produce a response and avoid another difficult afternoon against one of the league’s early pace-setters.

Maresca could be tempted to hand £125 signing Enzo Fernandez his full debut, with the Argentine set to battle with fellow new recruits Elliot Anderson and Ayyoub Bouaddi for a start in centre-midfield.
As for Coventry, Haji Wright (thigh) remains a long-term absentee, while Frank Onyeka (hip) and Sidiki Cherif (fitness) both missed the defeat to Hull and will be assessed ahead of kickoff this weekend.
