Bayer Leverkusen signs Liverpool star Quansah

Bayer Leverkusen have signed Liverpool prodigy Jarell Quansah from the Premier League champions for a reported fee of £35 million. The defender becomes the latest addition to Erik ten Hag’s squad as the Dutch manager strengthens his team ahead of the upcoming Bundesliga season.

Quansah’s move to Germany marks the end of his 17-year journey with Liverpool, with the transfer finalised on Wednesday.

The 22-year-old, who joined the Reds’ academy at just five years old, rose through the club’s ranks to make 58 senior appearances, scoring three goals and winning both the Premier League and Carabao Cup medals along the way.

The Warrington-born defender Quansah made his senior debut under Jürgen Klopp during Liverpool’s dramatic comeback win over Newcastle United in August 2023.

Under new head coach Arne Slot, the young centre-back featured 25 times during the 2024/25 campaign, with 13 appearances in the Premier League contributing to Liverpool’s historic 20th league title, a fitting end to his time at Anfield.

His final act as a Red came as he helped lift the Premier League trophy in front of the Liverpool faithful before now beginning a new chapter in Germany.

“He has already made an impressive impact in a Liverpool defence dominated by world-class players,” Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes told the BBC after Quansah signed for the German outfit.

“With Jarell, our defence gains significant dynamism, pace, and toughness in tackling. He is another very important building block for the future,” he concluded.

Quansah, on the other hand, expressed his delight after joining the German giants, saying that he has  ‘been watching them, and I love the way they play’

Softfootball has earlier reported Xabi Alonso’s interest in bringing one of Bayer Leverkusen’s defenders, Piero Hincapié to Real Madrid, which many believe was the reason for the quick signing of Quansah for a possible replacement.

The Real Madrid manager, Xabi Alonso, is reportedly planning to bring Bayer Leverkusen’s Piero Hincapie to the Santiago Bernabeu this summer, aiming to reunite with the Ecuadorian defender in a deal valued at around £34 million.

Quansah is likely to get his debut with Bayer later this month against another German side, Bochum, in a club friendly.
