Manchester City winger Jeremy Doku has rejected the notion that Liverpool are a better team, despite the Reds’ 2-0 victory at the Etihad Stadium.

The Belgian international believes City’s performance was competitive and that the result did not reflect a significant gap in quality between the two sides.

Speaking to the club’s website, Doku analyzed the nature of Liverpool’s goals. Softfootball reports that he attributed the defeat to specific moments rather than overall dominance.

He said:

To be fair if I look at the game I don’t think that they were much better than us. Two goals, one set piece and the second goal was a long ball, so well done to them.

Doku acknowledged Liverpool’s tactical effectiveness in exploiting space behind the defense but maintained that City handled the match well for large periods. He added:

We played well but the situations that we had we could have dealt better with them. We played better against them than we did away. Of course there is a gap in points but today you can’t say that they ran over us.

For Doku, the loss was a setback in the title race, but not an indication that Liverpool have surpassed City in ability.
