Newly crowned African Footballer of the Year Ademola Lookman has credited Atalanta for playing a central role in his development, following a difficult two-year spell at RB Leipzig before his move to Italy.

The Nigeria international joined Atalanta in 2022 and has since blossomed into one of the most feared attacking players in world football, scoring 13 goals in 31 league appearances during his debut season at the Gewiss Stadium.

Softfootball notes that his numbers have only improved since, with 17 goals and 10 assists across 45 games in the 2023-24 campaign, and 11 goals in 19 appearances so far this season.

Speaking to Flashscore, Lookman reflected on how much the club’s environment has contributed to his rise. He said:

I think the environment that the club gave me has been very key to obviously my growth as a player. And also, just timing, you know, I’ve always believed in myself and to be able to achieve great things.
