Former South Africa head coach Pitso Mosimane has dismissed reports claiming he rejected the opportunity to become the Super Eagles head coach, Softfootball added.

The highly respected African tactician, who was recently appointed as head coach of Iranian club Esteghlal FC, was heavily linked with the Nigeria job after Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro stepped down in February. However, Mosimane clarified that no formal approach was ever made by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

Speaking on the speculation, the former Al Ahly manager explained that while the rumours gained traction, there was never any official discussion regarding the position.

Mosimane noted that it would have been difficult to reject the chance to coach one of Africa’s biggest national teams, stressing that the opportunity was never placed before him.

According to him, any serious coaching appointment must begin with proper contact and formal negotiations, which, in this case, never happened.

He also admitted that leading the Super Eagles would have appealed to him, revealing that he has always been interested in managing a national team.

The experienced coach is widely regarded as one of Africa’s most successful managers, having won multiple CAF Champions League titles with Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly before taking on his latest challenge with Esteghlal FC.

His comments put an end to speculation that he turned down the Super Eagles job, making it clear that there was never an official offer from the NFF to consider.
