Former Cameroon and Liverpool defender Joel Matip has reportedly retired from professional football.

Softfootball notes that the 33-year-old has decided to end his playing career just months after leaving Liverpool, where he spent eight successful years.

According to German outlet Ruhr Nachrichten, Matip has chosen to call time on his career after failing to return to full fitness following a serious injury he suffered late in 2023.

The injury ruled him out for most of the campaign and prevented him from playing a major role in Jurgen Klopp’s final season at Liverpool.

Matip left Anfield at the end of the season as a free agent and had been linked with several clubs, including a possible return to the Premier League.

German club Hamburg were also said to be interested in signing him, with a scout reportedly making contact to ask if the club’s sporting director could discuss a possible free transfer.

However, reports now suggest that Matip has decided not to continue playing for any club.

The decision fits the quiet nature of his career. Matip was never a player who chased attention, and his reported retirement has come without a major public announcement.

During his time at Liverpool, the former Schalke defender became an important part of the club’s success under Klopp.

He won the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup with the Reds, leaving behind a strong legacy at Anfield.

Matip will be remembered as a calm, intelligent and reliable defender who played an important role in one of Liverpool’s most successful modern eras.
