The smallest country in terms of population at the 2026 FIFA World Cup is Curaçao, with an estimated 156,000 people as of 2026, officially making them the smallest nation ever to qualify for a World Cup.

Curaçao is a constituent island country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, located in the southern Caribbean Sea. Their qualification story is one of the most remarkable in modern football.

Softfootball understands that Curaçao qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup by finishing first in Group B during the third and final round of CONCACAF qualifiers. Managed by veteran Dutch coach Dick Advocaat, the “Blue Wave” completed a historic unbeaten campaign across 10 matches, recording 7 wins and 3 draws to secure direct qualification.

How Curaçao Shocked CONCACAF

Curaçao took full advantage of a wide‑open qualification pathway, created because regional giants USA, Mexico, and Canada qualified automatically as co‑hosts.

Second Round Dominance

Curaçao stormed through their initial group, winning all four matches:

  • Barbados — 4–1
  • Aruba — 2–0
  • Saint Lucia — 4–0
  • Haiti — 5–1

Final Round: Group B

Drawn alongside Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and Bermuda, Curaçao built momentum quickly. Key results included:

  • A commanding 2–0 home victory over Jamaica
  • A resounding 7–0 win against Bermuda

On 18 November 2025, Curaçao travelled to Kingston needing only a point to qualify, while Jamaica needed a win. With Dick Advocaat absent due to family reasons, assistant coach Dean Gorré took charge on the touchline. Curaçao held firm, securing the result they needed to complete their historic qualification.
