The conversation around creativity in football didn’t just appear out of nowhere it was sparked directly by the intensity and outcomes of yesterday’s major fixtures.
Following Carabao Cup final, where Manchester City defeated Arsenal 2–0 thanks to a brace from Nico O’Reilly, and the UEFA Champions League clash where Real Madrid edged out City 2–1, debates about tactics versus flair have taken center stage again.
It was in reaction to these matches that D Real Combo shared his strong opinion on the modern game via his YouTube channel .

Watching two highly tactical teams like City dominate possession and structure, and then seeing Real Madrid rely on moments of individual brilliance to win, only reinforced his belief that football is slowly drifting away from entertainment toward rigid efficiency.

He referenced legends like Ronaldinho and Neymar, players who built their legacy on flair and freedom. Softfootball reported that According to him, those are the kinds of players fans truly connect with not just because they win games, but because they create unforgettable moments on the pitch.
In his words:
“Football is being watered down. What people used to pay money to watch those moments of magic, the dribbles, the showboating that’s what they’re removing from the game. You see a player do one rainbow flick now, the next thing the coach is shouting from the touchline. Everything now is pass, press, collect the ball by force. Where is the joy? Where is the entertainment?”
He also pointed fingers at modern coaching philosophies, often associated with managers like Pep Guardiola. While acknowledging their success, he believes they have unintentionally created a generation of overly disciplined players who are afraid to take risks.
Another powerful part of his statement captured this frustration:
“We are raising robots, not entertainers anymore. Everybody wants to be efficient, nobody wants to express themselves. If you lose the ball trying something special, it’s like you’ve committed a crime. But those are the moments fans live for.”
Despite the heavy tactical influence seen in matches like City vs Arsenal and Real Madrid vs City, he highlighted a few players still carrying the torch of creativity, including Vinícius Júnior and Lamine Yamal. His message about Yamal, in particular, sounded like a warning to the future of football.
“Look at Lamine Yamal… please, may nobody go and restrict that boy. I don’t want any manager that will tell him, ‘Don’t dribble.’ Let him play. Let him express himself. Because once you remove that, you’ve removed what makes football beautiful.”

With results driven football dominating competitions, yesterday’s matches perfectly illustrated both sides of the argument structured dominance on one hand, and decisive individual brilliance on the other. And for D Real Combo, that contrast is exactly why this conversation matters now more than ever.
