Chelsea FC have been fined £10.7 million by the Premier League for breaching financial reporting, third-party investment, and youth development rules during the ownership of Roman Abramovich.

The developments come shortly after captain Reece James signed a contract extension until June 2032 on March 14, 2026. However, the defender has since suffered another injury setback, with head coach Liam Rosenior confirming that further medical tests are required to determine the extent of the issue.

According to Fabrizio Romano via his Official X handle, the club has also been handed a nine-month academy transfer ban, alongside a one-year first-team transfer ban, which has been suspended for two years.

Romano posted:

Chelsea have been handed a £10.7m fine for breaching Premier League rules related to financial reporting, third-party investment and youth development during the Roman Abramovich era. The club have also received an immediate 9-month academy transfer ban, plus a 1-year first-team transfer ban (suspended for two years).

Softfootball gathered that The sanctions follow a Premier League investigation into undisclosed payments made between 2011 and 2018 to players, unregistered agents, and third parties connected to the club.

These payments were not reported to football authorities at the time, breaching regulations requiring transparency and good faith.

Chelsea’s current ownership had voluntarily reported the issue in 2022, leading to a full review of the club’s historical financial submissions.

The Premier League confirmed that while rules were breached, Chelsea would not have violated Profitability and Sustainability Rules if the payments had been properly declared.
