The England defender completed his move to Manchester City on January 19, 2026, signing a five-and-a-half-year contract until 2031 in a deal reportedly worth £20 million plus add-ons.

Guéhi arrived at City with a reputation as one of the Premier League’s most reliable defenders. At Crystal Palace, he built a strong reputation for his 1-v-1 defending, composure on the ball, and leadership in defence.

Many expected him to strengthen Manchester City’s back line and bring stability to the defensive unit. However, his recent performances have raised questions among analysts.

In Manchester City’s 3–0 defeat to Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 first leg, Guéhi struggled against Madrid’s attacking movement.

Midfielder Federico Valverde played a decisive role in the match, scoring a hat-trick and repeatedly finding space in City’s defensive structure. Softfootball believes that Guéhi appeared uncomfortable during several defensive situations in the match.

The Madrid performance was not an isolated case. Since joining Manchester City, Guéhi’s performances have fluctuated, and he has yet to consistently reproduce the level of defending that defined his time at Crystal Palace.

Some analysts believe the defender may be struggling to adapt to City’s defensive structure and tactical demands.

Guéhi’s difficulties also reflect a broader defensive challenge for Manchester City this season.

Senior defenders such as Rúben Dias, John Stones, and Nathan Aké have also experienced inconsistent form during the 2025/26 campaign.

Despite recent criticism, Guéhi remains a highly talented defender with the ability to succeed at the highest level.

For Manchester City, the challenge will be helping the defender rediscover the confidence and composure that made him one of the Premier League’s most respected defenders before his move to the club.
