The spotlight shifts to Seattle Stadium on Friday as the United States and Australia face off in one of the most intriguing fixtures of the second round of matches in Group D at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Both nations arrive full of confidence after securing impressive victories in their opening games, with the winner taking a major step towards qualification for the knockout stages.

The United States silenced pre-tournament doubts with a commanding 4-1 victory over Paraguay. Under the guidance of coach Mauricio Pochettino, the Stars and Stripes produced one of their most complete performances in recent years.

The standout performer was Folarin Balogun, who announced himself on the world stage by scoring twice. His goals in the 31st and 50th minutes made him only the second American player to score multiple goals in a single World Cup match. Paraguay briefly threatened a comeback through Mauricio’s strike in the 73rd minute, but Giovanni Reyna sealed the emphatic victory with a stunning stoppage-time goal.

The Socceroos defeated fancied Turkey 2-0 despite spending much of the contest under pressure. Goals from Nestory Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe secured a famous win, but the real hero was goalkeeper Patrick Beach.

Making his competitive debut for Australia, Beach delivered a remarkable display between the posts, recording eight saves as Turkey dominated possession and created numerous chances. The Socceroos absorbed relentless pressure, conceding 72 percent possession and facing 30 shots, yet emerged with a clean sheet and three valuable points.

Friday’s meeting now carries enormous significance. Victory for either side would place them firmly in control of their qualification hopes and potentially secure an early route into the knockout rounds.

For the USA, it is an opportunity to prove their opening performance was no fluke. For Australia, it is a chance to show that their upset against Turkey was the beginning of something special rather than a one-off result.

Team News

Pochettino is likely to name an unchanged starting 11 following the USA’s fantastic 4-1 victory against Paraguay, though there are slight concerns over Christian Pulisic’s fitness.

Pulisic was taken off at half-time after picking up a knock, but Pochettino and Tyler Adams have both stated the the forward will be ready to face the Socceroos.

Meanwhile, Popovic could also look to name the same team that started in Australia’s victory against Turkey.

Beach was the standout performer in that triumph, and the 22-year-old goalkeeper should retain his place behind a back three of Alessandro Circati, Harry Souttar and Cameron Burgess.
