Egypt reached the World Cup quarter-finals after defeating Australia 4-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw after extra time, securing the Pharaohs’ first-ever victory in a World Cup knockout match, Softfootball reports.

Emam Ashour gave Egypt an early lead in the 13th minute, but Australia drew level through an own goal by Mohamed Hany, who became the first player to score two own goals in the same World Cup tournament. Despite chances at both ends, neither side could find a winner over 120 minutes.

Australia coach Tony Popovich made a late goalkeeping change before the shootout, introducing veteran Mathew Ryan for Patrick Beach, but it failed to pay off. Egypt converted all four of their penalties, while Harry Souttar and Lucas Herrington missed from the spot for the Socceroos.
