Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of 21-year-old Portuguese midfielder Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United in a club-record £85 million deal.
The midfielder has successfully completed his medical and formally signed his contract after Tottenham reached an agreement with West Ham less than 24 hours earlier.
Softfootball understands that the move surpasses Spurs’ previous transfer record and underlines the club’s determination to strengthen its midfield ahead of the new season.
Fernandes, who came through the academy at Sporting CP, joined West Ham in 2025 following an impressive spell at Southampton FC. Since arriving in the Premier League, he has established himself as one of the division’s brightest young midfielders, attracting interest from several top clubs.

Manchester United were also linked with the Portugal international, but Tottenham secured the deal after matching West Ham’s valuation and convincing the player to make North London his next destination.
The transfer reflects Tottenham’s ambitious recruitment strategy as the club continues reshaping its squad with young, high-quality talent. Fernandes is expected to play a key role in midfield thanks to his technical ability, composure in possession, and versatility, with Spurs viewing him as a cornerstone of their long-term project.
