Former Nigerian international Nduka Ugbade believes the Super Eagles failed to show enough aggression in their 1-1 draw with Benin Republic in Thursday’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
Softfootball understands that Benin took the lead in the first half through Mohammed Tijani before Victor Osimhen rescued a point for Nigeria with a late headed equaliser.
Speaking during AfroSports’ AFCON qualifying coverage on NTA, Ugbade said the Super Eagles dominated possession but lacked the intensity and physical edge needed to control the contest.
According to the former Golden Eaglets coach, the players appeared sluggish throughout the encounter and did not perform to the standard he expected despite securing the point that confirmed Nigeria’s qualification for AFCON 2025.
Ugbade also spoke about Osimhen’s growing goalscoring record for the national team, saying the striker has the potential to challenge the late Rashidi Yekini’s all-time Super Eagles scoring record if he maintains his current form.
However, he stressed that the two forwards possess different playing styles. While describing Osimhen as a determined and relentless goalscorer, Ugbade noted that Yekini was more adventurous, capable of shooting from almost any position and often willing to take greater risks in front of goal.
With qualification now secured, the Super Eagles will look to produce an improved performance when they host Rwanda in their final qualifying match.
