Son Heung-min announces he is leaving Tottenham, set to join LAFC

Tottenham captain, Son Heung-min has announced his desire to leave the English Premier League club in what is likely to be his final press conference for the north London club ahead of Spurs’ pre-season friendly against Newcastle United in his home country, South Korea.

The 33-year-old is set to join MLS side Los Angeles FC after a decade with Tottenham Hotspur that culminated with lifting the Europa League trophy after Tottenham defeated Manchester United in the final in Bilbao, Spain in May.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano via his X handle, the player has personally informed Tottenham Hotspur’s hierarchy, as well as new manager Thomas Frank, of his decision regarding his future.

Talks are currently ongoing with MLS side LAFC, as negotiations gather pace. This comes after the player was also approached by several Saudi Arabian clubs back in May, though his preference now appears to be a move to the United States.

The tweet reads:

“Negotiations underway with MLS side LAFC after he wad also approached by Saudi clubs in May.

“MLS, most likely destination”.

Son said his decision to leave the Premier League club was the most difficult of his career, adding that Tottenham, where he has spent the past decade, supports him as he looks to move on.

He said:

“It was the most difficult decision I have made in my career. The main reason is I have achieved everything I can at Tottenham. I need a new environment for a fresh challenge.

“I came to north London as a kid. A boy came to London who couldn’t speak English. I leave this club as a man. Thanks to all the Spurs fans who have given me so much love.”

The second game of Tottenham’s Asian tour will kick off on Sunday after their  1-0 victory in Hong Kong against fierce rivals Arsenal in the first north London derby played outside of the United Kingdom.

Tottenham are in Seoul as part of their pre-season preparations, with Son Heung-min set to start for his side against Newcastle in their friendly on Sunday, meaning his final appearance for the club could come in his home country.
