The Overlap Podcast has once again dragged football fans back into one of the most unforgettable title-race moments in Premier League history after posting a clip via their x handle of former referee Mike Dean reflecting on the iconic 2012 finale between Manchester City and Queens Park Rangers.

With the caption, “We all wanted that game!” Dean gave a rare behind-the-scenes account of what it felt like to officiate the dramatic title decider that ended with Sergio Agüero’s immortal winner.

He admitted that every referee wanted that fixture once the appointments were released, saying it already had the feel of something huge before a ball was even kicked.

Reflecting on the madness of that afternoon, Dean said:

“It was one of those games where I think as all the refs that week when the appointments come out on the Monday, we all wanted that game. Just the way the game transpired, just like the emotions. We all thought that City were gonna win. I think everybody did, didn’t they? And it just went completely the wrong way.”

He then touched on one of the strangest parts of the match, when QPR seemed to lose all urgency after learning they were safe from relegation. Dean explained:

“Once QPR found out they were safe, I think the game restarted… they make it two-two, and they just kick it back. And I said, ‘What’s going on here? Why’d they give them the ball back straight away?’ We actually said on the earpiece, ‘Why are they giving the ball back straight away, eh?’”

That moment has long been one of the most debated pieces of football folklore from that final day.

He also revealed that even the officiating team could sense chaos was coming in those dying moments. Dean recalled:

“Neil Swarbrick before the vision, he just went, ‘Keep switched on, something’s gonna happen.’ It just, you just knew something was gonna happen. You could just tell.”

And when the final goal finally came, he painted the scene vividly:

“I don’t think it’ll ever happen again… the last, literally the last kick of the season, the ball to go in the back of the net. And the noise in the stadium, it was just scary as hell… we got changed, and we just went back out and stood by the corner flag and watched the presentation. It was just unbelievable.”

It is the kind of story that reminds people why that 2012 finish still lives on as one of the wildest moments English football has ever produced.

But Mike Dean’s name also still carries baggage from more controversial moments in the modern game. His reflections inevitably reopen memories of the infamous Chelsea vs Tottenham Hotspur clash where Cristian Romero pulled Marc Cucurella’s hair.

Dean later admitted he got that call wrong as VAR, saying he should have sent Anthony Taylor to the monitor instead of letting play continue, a decision that ultimately led to Tottenham Hotspur’s late equaliser. That admission remains one of the most talked about VAR regrets in Premier League history.

The wider football conversation around the clip has also spilled into other nostalgic talking points, including Wayne Rooney’s disbelief over Luke Shaw’s longevity at Manchester United.

Softfootball reported that Rooney was left stunned by the stat showing Shaw had already reached 180 appearances for the club, a number that surprised many considering how often injuries have interrupted his career.

That kind of reaction fits perfectly with the mood of the Overlap clip too football has a way of making even the people who lived it stop and say, “How did that actually happen?”
