Sevilla president José María del Nido Carrasco has accused Real Madrid of trying to “destroy Spanish football” through their continued criticism of refereeing decisions.
Real Madrid recently filed a formal complaint over the officiating in their 1-0 LaLiga defeat to Espanyol, calling for the release of audio recordings between the referee and VAR officials during two key incidents.
One of the incidents involved Carlos Romero, who avoided a red card for a challenge on Kylian Mbappé before scoring the winning goal.
Madrid described Spain’s refereeing system as “totally discredited” and accused decisions against them of “manipulation and adulteration of the competition.”
However, Del Nido Carrasco strongly criticised the club’s approach and defended the integrity of Spanish referees. He told DAZN:
It’s intolerable and unacceptable. It brings into question the honour of referees and the competition. The world of football should denounce, publicly and in the courts, a statement which goes against football’s integrity.
The Sevilla president also accused Real Madrid of using their club television channel and other platforms to put pressure on referees.
The worst of all is that Real Madrid are trying to destroy Spanish football, with Real Madrid TV, and in various other ways.
We can’t tolerate that a club like Real Madrid try to destroy us. First of all, we give our unconditional support to referees. We won’t tolerate that their honour is being questioned.
The latest controversy comes as the LaLiga title race remains tightly contested, with Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid and Barcelona separated by just two points at the top of the table.
