Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has warned that the club could find themselves involved in a relegation battle next season if they fail to strengthen the squad with quality players.

Scholes believes Ruben Amorim has inherited a team that lacks a strong core and has identified major areas that need improvement during the summer transfer window.

Despite United recording some positive results, the former England midfielder remains concerned about the overall quality and balance of the squad.

Speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, Scholes argued that United need several significant additions to build a stronger team. Scholes said:

There are a few things that are concerning. There’s a lot of stuff he (Ruben Amorim) needs to do, we all know that, especially in transfer windows, but I don’t see a core of players.

When you look at teams, you look right down the spine of a team. Liverpool: great goalkeeper, great centre half, forwards, midfielders, whatever. I don’t think United have any of that in any position.

Scholes suggested that United should consider signing a new goalkeeper, two centre-backs, a central midfielder and a striker capable of providing greater quality and physical presence.

The former midfielder believes strengthening the spine of the team should be Amorim’s priority as he attempts to rebuild the club.
