Former Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has confirmed he will not stand for election as club president. Speaking on Iker Casillas’ podcast, the ex-Spain international explained that the demands of the job outweigh the personal benefits, Softfootball understands.
Pique had previously shown interest in leading the Catalan giants. However, he has since reconsidered after reflecting on the toll the position takes on previous holders. He said:
Being president of Barça is much more sacrifice than positive things I can give you and that is evidence, that is, you look back and see all the presidents of Barça that have been there, the sacrifice they have made is above the revenue that can give you.
The 38-year-old emphasized that he does not need the prestige or financial rewards associated with the role. He added:
Me I do not have the need for others of what it gives you to be president of Barça.
Despite stepping back, Pique left the door slightly open for future involvement if the club faces a crisis. He noted:
If the club really needs it one day, the responsibility I have is to be there because Barça has given me everything absolutely.
For now, however, he remains focused on his business ventures outside of football administration.
