Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente has handed Porto striker Samuel Omorodion his first senior international call-up for this month’s UEFA Nations League matches against Denmark and Switzerland.
Softfootball understands that the 20-year-old’s inclusion comes after an impressive start to life in Portugal, where he has scored 11 goals across the Primeira Liga and UEFA Europa League since joining Porto during the summer transfer window.
Speaking on the youngster’s selection, De la Fuente said Omorodion has shown enormous potential and deserves the opportunity to continue his development with the senior national team after catching the attention of the coaching staff.
Barcelona midfielder Marc Casado has also received a call-up following his impressive performances for the Catalan giants. The 21-year-old has established himself as a key figure in Hansi Flick’s midfield after injuries created opportunities in the first team.
De la Fuente praised Casado’s confidence, commitment and quality, adding that the youngster has earned his place while still having room for further improvement. He also commended Barcelona’s commitment to promoting young talents, describing it as beneficial for Spanish football.
Meanwhile, Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsi has been omitted from the squad after sustaining a facial injury during the club’s UEFA Champions League clash against Red Star Belgrade. Athletic Bilbao centre-back Aitor Paredes has been drafted in as his replacement.
Spain captain Alvaro Morata, who suffered a head injury during AC Milan training earlier in the week, has been declared fit after undergoing the required medical protocols.
The reigning Nations League champions have already secured a place in the quarter-finals after collecting 10 points from four matches. However, De la Fuente’s side still need a positive result from their remaining fixtures to guarantee top spot in the group ahead of second-placed Denmark.
