Atlanta 1996 Olympic gold medalist Abiodun Olugbemiga Obafemi isn’t holding back on his frustration with the commitment shown by some Super Eagles players, singling out their form gap between club and country following Nigeria’s 2-1 loss to Rwanda on Monday.
Softfootball understands Obafemi addressed the issue directly in a chat with Brila FM, saying:
We expected so much from these guys based on their performances with their clubs, but when they come to Nigeria, they do what they cannot in their teams. It’s a very big concern. They must be competitive. I don’t understand why they are selecting games.
The 50-year-old’s comments echo a wider frustration among former internationals who feel current players don’t always carry the same intensity into Super Eagles duty that they show at club level.
It’s a criticism that has followed Nigerian football for years, and one that resurfaces every time results disappoint on the international stage.
