Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo has expressed confidence in Taiwo Awoniyi and Chris Wood despite the club failing to sign another striker during the January transfer window.
Awoniyi, who is yet to find his best form this season, was linked with a possible move away from the City Ground in January. However, Forest managed to keep the Nigerian forward and other key players while making no additions to their attacking options.
Speaking ahead of Tuesday night’s FA Cup clash against Exeter City, Nuno insisted that he remains satisfied with the quality of his squad. Nuno said:
I think we are in a good place as a squad
The Portuguese manager believes Forest have enough strength within their squad to compete strongly for the remainder of the season, provided the players remain fit.
As long as we keep ourselves healthy and work as good as we are working, I think we can compete until the end of the season.
Nuno also admitted that the January transfer window was challenging for clubs, explaining that Forest’s main priority was to retain their key players.
It was a quiet window for all the clubs. It is always very difficult to operate and we were aware of that.
We had a clear intention to retain the core of the squad. All the players are here and are available.
We didn’t achieve what we wanted because it is very hard. We keep going.
Awoniyi will now look to repay his manager’s faith as Nottingham Forest continue their campaign across domestic competitions.
