Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has urged the club’s supporters to remain patient with goalkeeper Robert Sanchez following a series of mistakes in the Premier League.
Sanchez has come under pressure after making costly errors, with Filip Jorgensen also pushing for more playing time ahead of Chelsea’s clash with West Ham.
Maresca admitted he is yet to decide which goalkeeper will start the game but praised both players for their performances.
Not yet. We have two or three days. Any decision I make, I feel good because Filip has done well. Filip or Robert, we will see, but any decision will be okay.
The Italian coach also pointed out that even top goalkeepers can make mistakes, stressing that leaving a player out does not necessarily mean they have lost the manager’s trust.
Sometimes it can happen, not only in Robert’s case, but it happened this season with Alisson. I was reading about Donnarumma that Luis Enrique left him out.
Maresca revealed that Sanchez was initially his first-choice goalkeeper but acknowledged that Chelsea have two capable options, saying:
The first time I spoke with Filip in July, I made it clear that the number one choice was Robert. We have two good goalkeepers, so we can make some different decisions.
However, Maresca warned that Sanchez cannot continue making mistakes without facing competition for his position.
It doesn’t mean that Robert can make a mistake every game and stay in goal,
he concluded.
