Manchester City Plot Summer Move for Real Madrid Goalkeeper Andriy Lunin

Manchester City are reportedly exploring a summer move for Real Madrid’s backup goalkeeper, Andriy Lunin, as Pep Guardiola begins to consider life beyond Ederson.

Softfootball Understands that the Premier League giants are weighing up a £52 million bid, including potential add-ons, for the Ukrainian international, who remains second-choice to Thibaut Courtois at Madrid.

Spanish journalist Adrián Fernández Díaz Varela shared the development on his official X account earlier this week.

He said:

“Manchester City would be willing to offer £52 million inclusive of add-ons for Andriy Lunin as the Ukraine international continues to be behind Thibaut Courtois in the pecking order at Real Madrid”

Despite limited opportunities, Lunin gave a good account of himself in the 2023/24 season. He made 14 appearances for Los Blancos, kept six clean sheets, and conceded 19 goals across all competitions. Known for his composure and sharp reflexes, the 26-year-old has built a reputation as a reliable shot-stopper who’s comfortable playing out from the back completing over 86% of his passes in La Liga.

City see Lunin as a long-term option between the sticks, especially with Ederson now in his early 30s. But luring the keeper away from Madrid won’t be straightforward. Lunin signed a contract extension last year, tying him to the Spanish giants until 2030.

Interestingly, this potential transfer could take on a new twist. Real Madrid are believed to be monitoring Rodri the Spanish midfielder who recently won the 2024 Ballon d’Or. While no official talks have been confirmed, insiders believe a swap deal might not be off the table, with Madrid possibly using Lunin as leverage in any discussions for Rodri.

Whether a straight purchase or part of a larger negotiation, City’s interest in Lunin is real. With the goalkeeper now entering his prime, this could be the moment for him to take the next step and the Premier League might just be where he does it.
