Ademola Lookman has expressed his disappointment at seeing Victor Boniface left off the shortlist for the 2024 CAF Men’s Player of the Year award, despite the striker’s standout campaign with Bayer Leverkusen.
Boniface played a central role in Leverkusen’s remarkable unbeaten Bundesliga title triumph last season, which was also complemented by a DFB Pokal success under Xabi Alonso.
Softfootball notes that the Nigerian forward scored an impressive 21 goals in 34 appearances across all competitions during that campaign.
Speaking to Sporty TV, Lookman didn’t hide his belief that his international teammate had done more than enough to warrant recognition. He said:
Obviously Boniface, my teammate, had an amazing season last year.
I think with his personal achievements, personal goals, and also winning two titles last year with Leverkusen, they were unbeaten in their league.
He added, with a hint of resignation:
Special, maybe he could have been nominated for sure but you know I am not the one that makes the rules, you know.
