Former Super Eagles captain Nwankwo Kanu believes Ademola Lookman is the leading candidate to win the 2024 CAF Men’s Player of the Year award.

Softfootball understands that Kanu based his support on Lookman’s outstanding performances for both club and country over the past year, insisting no other African player has matched his achievements.

The Atalanta winger enjoyed a remarkable campaign, helping the Italian club secure UEFA Europa League glory and establishing himself as one of Africa’s standout performers. He also became the only African player nominated for the 2024 Ballon d’Or, finishing 14th in the final rankings.

Speaking with Brila FM, Kanu described Lookman as a humble and hardworking player whose consistency throughout the year makes him the most deserving candidate for the prestigious individual honour.

The two-time African Player of the Year winner said he could not think of any African footballer who had performed better than the 27-year-old during the period under review.

Kanu also highlighted Lookman’s impressive contributions for both Atalanta and the Super Eagles, noting that his performances have been consistent at club and international level.

Lookman remains one of the favourites for the CAF Men’s Player of the Year award after enjoying the best season of his career and continuing his fine form into the current campaign.
