Halftime at the Al Madina Stadium, and Nigeria take a deserved 1-0 lead into the break.
Asisat Oshoala got the opener in the 8th minute after Super Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade played a brilliant through pass. Oshoala picked her spot, but the goalkeeper made a massive save. The rebound then bounced off Oshoala and into the net to give Nigeria the lead.
The game took a dramatic turn in the 41st minute when Blessing Demehin Oluwatosin was shown a red card for stopping Barbara Banda, who would have been clear on goal. as the last defender, her challenge left the referee with no option after the VAR review.
Despite being reduced to 10 players, the Super Falcons have been the better side so far. Zambia have struggled to create clear-cut chances and are yet to register a shot on target.
Nigeria now need to defend very well and protect their lead as they play the entire second half with 10 players.
Justin Madugu may need to bring on Shukurat Oladipo, whose pace could help match Barbara Banda and provide extra cover in the defensive line.
