Kylian Mbappé’s international break took an unexpected turn after the French Football Federation confirmed that the Real Madrid forward has left the France camp due to renewed inflammation in his right ankle. His decision to fly back to Spain came barely 24 hours after starring in France’s 4–0 win over Ukraine, a match where he reached his milestone of hitting 400 career goals, as reported by SoftFootball. The situation may not be dramatic yet, but it’s definitely concerning.

Just the day before, he looked lively and almost unstoppable again as France sealed World Cup qualification. He scored twice, once from the penalty spot, and also delivered an assist. But behind the glowing numbers was an ankle that has quietly troubled him for weeks. He even missed one France match back in October because of the same issue, and after Thursday’s match, it flared up pretty badly.

Although he completed all 90 minutes, the ankle stayed swollen and very uncomfortable through the night, leading to a quick talk between France’s medical staff and Real Madrid’s doctors. The decision was simple: send him back for deeper assessment. It’s precautionary, yes, but also the smart thing to do. His absence means he will miss France’s next qualifier against Azerbaijan on Sunday, and while Deschamps will feel it, Real Madrid will feel it even more.
Fabrizio Romano, in a post shared on his official X account, reports Kylian Mbappé departing the France national team camp early due to right ankle inflammation, heading back to Real Madrid for treatment.

Mbappé has been ridiculously sharp under Xabi Alonso this season with 18 goals and two assists in just 16 games, contributing to almost 60 percent of Madrid’s goals. Losing that kind of impact, even for a short spell, is not something any club wants.
To make things a bit worse, Eduardo Camavinga also withdrew from the France squad with a minor muscle issue. Not serious, they say, but still far from ideal as Madrid enters a very demanding run of fixtures.

For now, France move on without their captain, and Madrid wait, hoping this is only a small setback and not something hiding a bigger problem.
