Juventus have reached an agreement with Chelsea to sign Portuguese defender Renato Veiga on a straight loan until the end of the current campaign.

The Serie A giants moved quickly after abandoning plans to pursue Barcelona defender Ronald Araújo, who opted to remain at the Spanish club.

Softfootball gathered that Juventus will pay approximately €4.5 million for the temporary transfer, while Chelsea will continue to cover the player’s salary and agent commission throughout the loan spell. The deal does not include an option or obligation to make the move permanent.

The 21-year-old attracted interest from Borussia Dortmund and Lazio, but he reportedly prioritised a switch to Turin. Veiga’s versatility is considered a major advantage, as he is capable of playing both at centre-back and left-back.

Chelsea only signed the Portugal international from FC Basel six months ago, but regular playing opportunities have been limited.

Juventus believe his arrival will provide much-needed depth following long-term injuries to Gleison Bremer and Juan Cabal, giving manager Thiago Motta another reliable defensive option for the remainder of the season.
