Liverpool head into the Merseyside derby against Everton with mixed emotions after a painful European exit and a recent league response. The Reds were dumped out of the Champions League 4–0 on aggregate by PSG, a result that sparked heavy reactions from fans after a disappointing night at Anfield.

However, softfootball also mentioned that Arne Slot’s side quickly bounced back with a comfortable 2–0 Premier League win over Fulham, offering some relief ahead of the Everton clash.

Liverpool face fresh concerns in attack after Hugo Ekitike suffered a serious injury setback and is yet to undergo surgery. The striker’s absence adds to Slot’s selection issues, with Alexander Isak not fully match-fit to play 90 minutes.

Joe Gomez is also unavailable, while several other players remain doubts as the squad manages a tight run of fixtures.

Everton, on the other hand, come into the derby in strong home form and will look to capitalise on Liverpool’s injury problems and inconsistent away record.

Speaking ahead of the derby as reported by liverpool via their x handle, Arne Slot expressed concern for his injured striker while also reflecting on Liverpool’s overall progress and mentality:

No, he hasn’t been operated on yet. Devastating for him. Coming to a new club, having so much impact straightaway… your first thoughts are always with him, being out for such a long time and missing special moments. But he’s not the first and will not be the last player to go through this. Many come back stronger, and I’m 100% sure he will too.

On Liverpool’s performance level and squad strength, he added:

If you watched the PSG game, especially at home, the future looks bright. We created chances, had more possession, and showed we can compete at the highest level. Even with injuries during the game, this team has already proven it can compete with Europe’s best.

Slot also addressed squad planning and injuries:

We are a trading club. We don’t think in numbers, we think in areas. Some players will leave, and we will adjust accordingly. It’s good that we signed two number nines because situations like this show why depth is important.

Liverpool now shift focus fully to domestic duties, but with fitness concerns, a tough away environment, and Everton’s strong momentum, the derby promises to be another major test for Arne Slot’s side.
