Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has made a major selection decision ahead of his side’s Premier League showdown against Liverpool at Anfield by dropping first-choice goalkeeper Ederson.
Softfootball understands that Stefan Ortega was handed the starting role, while Ederson was named among the substitutes for the high-profile encounter.
According to reports from City Extra’s Portuguese outlet and journalist Sam Lee, the Brazilian goalkeeper’s omission was not believed to be injury-related, with Ederson available on the bench. The decision has therefore been viewed as a tactical one by Guardiola.
Ederson came under heavy criticism following Manchester City’s dramatic UEFA Champions League draw with Feyenoord, where he was blamed for two of the Dutch side’s three goals after City surrendered a commanding lead.
Ortega, who has earned a reputation as a dependable deputy, was rewarded with his first Premier League start of the campaign after making only four appearances across all competitions this season.
Guardiola also welcomed the return of Ruben Dias to the starting lineup after his recovery from injury, while Matheus Nunes was included from the outset. Kevin De Bruyne, however, remained on the bench as he continues his gradual return to full fitness.
The German goalkeeper remains a favourite among City supporters, particularly after his decisive save from Tottenham Hotspur’s Son Heung-min in last season’s title run-in, a moment many believe proved crucial in City’s championship success.
