Former Manchester City midfielder Joey Barton has ignited fresh debate after claiming that no African defender in football history has surpassed former Liverpool centre-back Jamie Carragher.

The outspoken Englishman insisted Carragher’s consistency and longevity in the Premier League placed him above every defender the African continent has produced.

Others also highlighted Morocco’s 2022 FIFA World Cup heroes, led by Romain Saïss, as evidence of Africa’s rich defensive talent over the years.
