Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has offered a candid reflection on Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign, acknowledging both the progress made under his leadership and the painful reality of falling short.
Speaking to the media, Chelle highlighted the difficult situation he inherited and the narrow margins that ultimately denied Nigeria a place at the tournament.
This was his statement:
When I arrived, Nigeria had three points from 12. We fought hard to reach the playoffs, but those two dropped points against Zimbabwe hurt us a lot. It was in our hands to qualify for the World Cup, but we didn’t.
Softfootball understands that Nigeria’s failure to qualify has sparked widespread criticism, with many Nigerians expressing frustration over missing a second consecutive World Cup.

Among the strongest reactions came from the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, who recently told former Super Eagles captain Joseph Yobo during a project commissioning that Nigerians are not happy with the team’s performance and absence from the global tournament.
