Cundy: Chelsea Dodged A Bullet By Missing Out On Osimhen

Former Chelsea defender Jason Cundy has said he’s relieved the club didn’t sign Victor Osimhen over the summer, arguing the Nigerian striker’s arrival would have disrupted Nicolas Jackson’s development at Stamford Bridge.

Osimhen had been strongly linked with a move to Chelsea before eventually joining Galatasaray from Napoli. Softfootball gathered that Cundy addressed the transfer saga directly during an appearance on talkSPORT, offering a blunt take on how things played out.

Speaking on the show, Cundy explained:

I’m glad we didn’t get Osimhen in the summer because if we did, we wouldn’t be seeing the numbers Jackson is putting up. But there is a case to be said. Do we need a backup? And Nkunku right now isn’t that backup? And that’s the problem we have as a squad.

He went on to question who exactly Chelsea should be targeting instead:

We don’t really have a genuine backup for Jackson, but because he’s so young, how do you back up someone so young. So therefore, if you bring someone in, you got to bring someone who’s going to go over Jackson. Who is that player?
