Softfootball can confirm Chelsea have officially completed the signing of promising Italian full-back Marco Palestra from Atalanta after agreeing a transfer package worth €50 million plus €5 million in add-ons.
The move comes less than 24 hours after reports emerged that the Blues had entered the race for the highly-rated defender, with the club moving swiftly to beat Inter Milan to his signature.
Palestra arrives at Stamford Bridge following a breakthrough campaign in Serie A, where he impressed during his loan spell with Cagliari. Despite being only 21 years old, the Italian defender established himself as one of the league’s standout young performers, earning widespread praise for his defensive maturity, athleticism and versatility.

His performances were rewarded with the Serie A Defender of the Year award and two senior international appearances for Italy National Football Team, significantly boosting his reputation across Europe.
Chelsea’s decision to move aggressively for Palestra is viewed as part of the club’s long-term defensive rebuild under incoming manager Xabi Alonso. The signing also follows the departure of Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid in a deal worth €55 million plus €5 million in bonuses.
In many ways, Chelsea have effectively reinvested the funds received from Cucurella’s sale directly into one of Europe’s most exciting young defenders.

The deal represents a major statement of intent from the Blues, who were barely linked with Palestra before launching their successful late move. Inter Milan had been considered favourites for much of the race, but Chelsea’s financial package and sporting project ultimately proved decisive.
With Palestra now officially heading to Stamford Bridge, Chelsea supporters will be eager to see whether the Italian can justify his hefty price tag and develop into the club’s next defensive cornerstone for years to come.
