Michael Carrick has offered a cautious response when asked about Marcus Rashford potentially returning to Manchester United, stating that decisions still need to be made and nothing has been finalized at this stage. This was reported by transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano via his official X handle.
Romano reported:
Michael Carrick on possible return for Rashford: I just think there’s decisions to be made in time and Marcus is in that situation. But at this point in time, nothing’s been decided. And it will be, because it has to be at a certain point, but at this stage, there’s nothing to say.
Softfootball understands that Carrick’s non-committal comments come amid growing uncertainty over Rashford’s future. The forward is currently on a temporary spell with Barcelona, where reports suggest the Catalan club hold a purchase option worth around €30 million.
Rashford’s strong performances in Spain have fueled speculation that his long-term future could lie away from Old Trafford. Back in December 2025, the England international indicated his desire to remain at Barcelona beyond the loan arrangement, making clear that he was open to turning the move permanent.

Carrick’s latest remarks have sparked mixed reactions among supporters. Some Manchester United fans oppose the idea of Rashford returning, believing both player and club may benefit from a permanent separation. Others feel the situation should remain open until Barcelona decide whether to activate the option.
Meanwhile, Manchester United’s board are reportedly considering giving Carrick the chance to continue as manager next season if his recent positive results continue. Internal meetings have already taken place as the club evaluates its long-term direction.

Carrick has gradually won support through improved performances and a calmer tactical structure, leading some observers to believe he could be the right figure to guide a rebuild. Popolar football commentator D Real Kombo has publicly backed Carrick on his YouTube channel, calling him the ideal man for the role despite recent setbacks.
The coming months could therefore shape two major decisions at Old Trafford, whether Carrick stays in charge and whether Rashford has any route back into the club’s future plans.
