Brazil and Norway renew their intriguing World Cup rivalry on Sunday at MetLife Stadium, with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.

The Selecao booked their place in the last 16 after a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over Japan. Carlo Ancelotti’s tactical switch proved decisive as Casemiro cancelled out Kaishu Sano’s opener before Gabriel Martinelli struck a stoppage-time winner to keep Brazil’s title hopes alive.

Despite being five-time world champions, Brazil have never beaten Norway in four previous meetings. Their most memorable encounter came at the 1998 World Cup, when the Vikings fought back to claim a famous 2-1 victory, while their latest meeting ended in a 1-1 friendly draw in 2006.

Norway have enjoyed an impressive return to the World Cup, reaching the knockout rounds through an attack led by Erling Haaland. The Manchester City striker scored a late winner against Ivory Coast in the round of 32 to take his tournament tally to five goals, placing him just one behind Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe in the Golden Boot race.
