Third-tier Arminia Bielefeld produced one of the biggest shocks of the German Cup season by defeating holders Bayer Leverkusen 2-1 in the semi-final. The result ended Leverkusen’s hopes of retaining the trophy and sent Arminia into the final.
According to Softfootball, Leverkusen appeared to be on course for another victory after taking the lead early in the contest. However, Arminia refused to be intimidated by their more illustrious opponents and gradually grew into the game.
The third-tier side responded strongly and turned the match around with two goals that stunned Leverkusen. Their determination and defensive organisation helped them protect their advantage during the closing stages.
Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface was introduced from the bench as Leverkusen searched for a way back into the contest. However, the Nigerian forward was unable to inspire a comeback against an Arminia side that defended with tremendous commitment.
The defeat represents a major setback for Leverkusen, who had been among the strongest teams in German football. Arminia, meanwhile, can now look forward to a historic appearance in the German Cup final after eliminating the reigning champions.
