Atletico Madrid have permanently banned nine supporters from attending the club’s matches following separate incidents involving crowd disorder and racist behaviour.
The disciplinary action comes after Atletico’s La Liga clash against city rivals Real Madrid on September 29 was temporarily suspended when some fans threw objects, including lighters, onto the pitch at the Metropolitano Stadium.
The Spanish club also faced sanctions from UEFA after a section of their supporters engaged in racist and discriminatory behaviour during Atletico’s 4-0 Champions League defeat to Benfica on October 2.
Following a detailed investigation, Atletico confirmed that their security department worked closely with law enforcement authorities, reviewing extensive audio-visual evidence to identify those responsible for the incidents.
Softfootball understands that the nine individuals found guilty of serious misconduct have now been permanently expelled from the club under Atletico’s internal disciplinary regulations.
The Madrid-based club reiterated its firm stance against all forms of violence, racism and discrimination, insisting such behaviour has no place in football and does not reflect the values of the club or the overwhelming majority of its supporters.
Atletico also reaffirmed its commitment to working with relevant authorities to ensure a safe and respectful environment for players, officials and fans at all future matches.
