Athletic Bilbao manager Ernesto Valverde has urged his players to take advantage of Real Madrid’s vulnerabilities when both sides meet in tonight’s La Liga clash, softfootball reports.
Real Madrid head into the encounter second in the standings, while Athletic Bilbao occupy fourth place as they continue their push for Champions League qualification.
Speaking ahead of the game, Valverde acknowledged the quality of Carlo Ancelotti’s side but insisted his team must remain disciplined and clinical if they are to get a positive result.
“They are the league champions. They recently lost to Liverpool and Milan in the Champions League, but in the league they are closing in on Barcelona’s points,” Valverde told Tribal Football.
“They are doing well, as always. They are a great team. Winning is not easy and maintaining a line of dominance, which is what is asked of these teams, is not easy.”
The former Barcelona coach also stressed that the title race remains wide open despite Real Madrid’s strong position.
“Even if Real Madrid wins now and in a month is seven points ahead of Barcelona, or if it is the other way around, La Liga will not be over,” he added.
Valverde highlighted the threat posed by Kylian Mbappé and Madrid’s array of attacking stars, warning his players to stay alert throughout the contest.
“I have a lot to choose from because if I focus too much on one, we might let another go. Mbappé is one of the difference-makers, but they are all extraordinary players and you can never let your guard down.”
He concluded by stressing the importance of limiting Madrid’s counter-attacking opportunities.
“We have to do everything right and never lose concentration. They have resources. If you don’t finish your attacks, Real Madrid will punish you because they rarely make mistakes. As long as we limit their attacks, we will have our chances.”
